Last night I went to the opening of a superb exhibition called 'Mind over Matter'

It's a science/art collaboration working with older individuals who have become brain donors to the Cambridgeshire brain bank and the effects of dementia and Alzheimer's on both the physical condition of the brain and the mental condition of the individual.

It's hugely appropriate at the moment given that media attention is focused very heavily on donation and is another example of how removing anonymity from the donation process is such a powerful tool for promoting the vital research resource that donation is.

I can't really do it justice by describing the component parts because that would actually take away from the perfection (and believe me, I rarely use that term lightly) as a whole. The artwork itself - largely photography - is combined with the superb other-worldly setting of the labyrinthine (great word - seldom used) and dilapidated setting of Shoreditch Town Hall's basement display space - plus the use of imagery and installation work alongside some really simple but effective touches which just work together incredibly.

I rarely gush like this because I hate to recommend things and then have people come back and say 'yeah. it was...OK' but just this once - I'm prepared to risk it.

I confess that I do also have a somewhat vested interest because my Grandma suffered from dementia before she died and this exhibition really made me think properly about the nature of degenerative conditions like these and the fact that longer life span will inevitably lead to higher incidences. It also made me think about her - which is something I haven't done for a long time.

It's only on from today until 23 October. Shoreditch town hall is a bus ride away from here and I am sure can be easily found from other starting points by this and other methods of public transport!
